Cameroonian music is especially known for makossa, an urban style developed in Douala from the 1950s onward and brought to international audiences by artists such as Manu Dibango. Bikutsi, rooted in the traditions of the Beti peoples of central and southern Cameroon, also became a major urban dance genre, particularly in Yaoundé. Other styles reflect Cameroon's diversity, such as assiko from the Bassa people, Bamileke mangambeu or bend-skin from the west. These styles remain present at celebrations and in the media, while younger artists blend them with afropop, hip-hop, gospel and electronic productions.
