Occitan music brings together the traditions of the Occitan-speaking territories of southern France, as well as the Occitan valleys of Italy and the Aran Valley in Spain. Its instruments vary by region: the cabrette in Auvergne and Rouergue, the bodega in Languedoc, the boha in Gascony, the hurdy-gurdy, fifes or galoubet and tambourin in Provence. Bourrées, rondeaux, farandoles, polyphonic songs and dance repertoires reflect this diversity. Since the cultural revival of the 1970s, many artists have used Occitan in chanson, folk, rock, dub, hip-hop or experimental music. This contemporary creation accompanies the transmission of the dances, instruments and language.
